NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY "EANOATIRA.V) V

RACING AT HASTINGS

FIELDS OF USEFUL SIZE

SOME HORSES IN . FORM

Highly satisfactory fields have been paid up for the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting at Hastings to-morrow, and. there is sure to be a succession o£ interesting contests. This meeting is customarily a two-day fixture, but the club recently decided to abandon one day this, season, and has compressed into the remaining day the best items usually spread over two d^ys. It is for this reason that the Steeples and Hurdles are both to be run on the cmc day this year. At most recent advice the track was in excellent order. ■

There is a" big field in the Trial Plate, for horses that have not won a race with mote than £50 at time o£ nomination, and a surprise is possible. The favourite will probably, be Foreign Queen, who scored a runaway victory at Marton last month at her most recent start, and she looks like being hard to beat. Her principal opposition may be ' provided by" Thornproofy Wild Heather, La Fleur, and Joe; Thornproof is another previous winner in the field, and Wild Heather and La Fleur. went attractively at Otaki a fortnight ago. Margaret Rose and Alpine Camp are probably the! heat of. the remainder.. A pair .who will be supported are Foreign Queen and Thbrnproof. ,

On Otaki running Alpinist looks to have a. first-rate chance in the Kidnappers Hack Handicap, in spite of the weight she will be giving her opponents. Among the others, favourable prospects appear' to be held by Fondle, . Megaphone, Henry of Navarre, and Vitaphone. Fondle was a winner on the track in. April at her last start, and Megaphone is the one horse yet to have beaten the Gisborne crack, Tai Ao. Henry of Navarre and Vitaphone raced well at Otaki, and an improved showing may be expected from the latter, as it was his first race for several months. Good efforts are likely to be coming from Alpinist and Vitaphone.

I.3O.—HAWKES BAY STEEPI/ECHASE, of 120 soys; about two mJles and a half.

There.have been some thrilling contests for. the Hawkes Bay Steeplechase, and although'this year's field is not up to the standard of some past years nevertheless another very interesting struggle may be anticipated. ■ The horses who have recently shown the best form are probably Princess Elizabeth ■• and Jen, and eacbshould make a creditable, showing.. The former was;a winner.^-' Wanganui at her first start over the country, and on the final day ran second to Copey. Jen was third on the first day at Wanganui, and subsequently made a very forward showing for two. and a-half miles .in the. Winter Steeples at Ellerslie. Others whose form has been fair this winter are King's Counsel, Hard Gold, and Kowhatu, the two last named ;being improvers. Disrank and Airtight are also entitled to consider. ?, t'. on' A V?F who aPPeal are Princess Elizabeth and Jen." '

2.S.—WINTEK HANDICAP, of 70 sots: one mile.

There is not much recent form for a guide in the Winter Handicap, except that of Forest Stag, who is weighted up to the best of his performances. Forest Stag nevertheless fought grimly at Otaki, and he needs only to be in the same form tomorro.w to make things interesting. The best of the others read to be Court Lady who won a like event at the April Meeting, and Gold Ruler, who ran two seconds in highweights at the same meeting. Two on the minimum who would require only to be near their best to account for the opposition are Miss Hastings and, Gaptam Dan, but neither may yet be quite forward enough, though Hiss Hastings is coming steadily to hand and should have a turn before long. The favourites may be Forest Stag ami Court Lady. 2.4O.—HAWKES BAY mjKDLES, of HO sotsabout one mile and three-quarters.

. Fancy -will probably be well distributed m the Hawkes Bay Hurdles, with Easterly, Conjuror 11., and Callapat in most demand. Easterly is well seasoned, and should be hard to beat with 10.13, in spite of her Ellerslie failures. The improved Callapat may find the distance just too far, and for this reason Conjuror 11. is preferred to him. Oth.ers with definite prospects are.Manuiri, Adventus, and Okapua, of whom the best may be Adventus, an improving, hurdler who ran two.fair races on the.flat,in open company at Otaki. The public selections promise to include Easterly and Conjuror 11.

S.2O—HASTINGS HACK HANDICAP, of 70

soys; six furlongs and a half.

There is a numerous but not very strong field in the Hastings Hack Handicap, and there is not much recent form lor .assistance. Anemometer, Megaphone,' and Iliotous look as likely as any of them, arid because their efforts have been the latest Riotous and Anemometer are probably entitled to main consideration* There is plenty of room for a surprise, a couple . with chances of bringing such off being Gray Lass and San Quex. Some of those engaged r have not raced for a long time. A possible pair read to be Riotous and Anemometer.

4.S.—HERETAUNGA HANDICAP.-of 00 soys;

six furlongs and a half.

The open flat horses have their one chance of the day in the Heretaunga Handicap, which concludes the racing. A good lot of average sprinters have. been drawn together, and the issue ie open. The speedy promoted hack, Royal Hunting, should not want for support, and he may well prove up to the class ho will be meeting, as he is undoubtedly very lit. Best representatives o£ the tried division look to be Imperial Fame, Juggle, and Teller, the first named, judged on his Otaki efforts, being nearly ready for one of his best showing;*. The distance may be too far for spec 'y Kaihoro, but if Aipinist is reserved she should make a bold bid for a part of the stake. Tlie final hoist may include the numbers of Royal Hunting and Imperial Fame.

The programme and prospects are:— 12.15.—TRIAL PLATE, of 65 sots; tworyearolds 8.5, older horses 8.10, less 31b in case of eeldlngs and mares; flye furlongs and a half.
