POWER CHARGES

DECREASES AT HUTT

Reductions in certain electricity charges were announced by the chairman of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board (Mr. S. Blackley) at its meeting yesterday.

He said that the board had made a reduction of 25 per cent, in the horsepower charge to users of milking machines, and a reduction of the, minimum charge for domestic lighting consumers which would now be 3s a month over the whole of the board's area, whereas previously those in the far country areas were paying 4s a month. Both these reduced charges would be subject to the usual discpunts, and would take effect from Ist July. On street lighting charges to local bodies the board had decided to make a reduction of 5 per cent., operating from the beginning of this financial year.

A.letter was received from the Waiwetu Progressive Association suggesting that as "no doubt the board had benefited by the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill, 1932," it should pass on,its savings to its , consumers by way of reduced rates. The engineer-geenral manager (Mr. E. F. Hollands) reported that he had replied to the association regretting that no reductions could be granted except those mentioned above. The board had gained very little benefit from the provisions of the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill. This reply was approved of by the board. A similar letter from the Eastern Petone ' Ratepayers' Association was received and similarly dealt with.. Thanks for the board's' efforts to reduce charges were received from the Moera Ratepayers' League. • ■ -
