SYDNEY STREET ROUTE
WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
The debatable western access tramway route via Museum street and Sydney street was referred to as a possible means of providing work for the unemployed when the City Counci' waited on the Minister of Employment (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coatesj yesterday afternoon seeking financial aid. ■ . .
The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A; Hislop) said that the Council could, put sixty men on that work to-morrow, and keep them engaged for five months, but the Government declined to give the necessary Order-in-Council.' The • route had been approved by -the Government's own officers. Mr. Hislop said that since the project was turned down the second time he had had the matter considered by. a committee of engineers, and one of the schemes they had recommended as in cv.cry way . desirable was the Sydney street route. "I was thinking of coming along and asking the Government again," he added.
Mr. R. McKeen, M.P., remarked that it would take a good deal to convince the people of the Government's contention that the proposed' tramway would affect the amenities of Parliament House.
When the Minister was replying to the deputation, Mr. MeKeen asked if he had anything to say about the Sydney, street route. .
Mr. Coates said he would be agreeable to place the matter before Cabinet for consideration, but he could not make, any definite promise about authorising the, route. • ,
