DISCIPLINE NEEDED

YOUNG ; MEN'S OFFENCES

Four young men-Cyril Anderson, Sher- »° n l A"-d l e.rson'^ r, ancis William Trembath fft W4 ham r chas Kckson-appeared before Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme L/Ourt to-day.for sentence on charges of breaking and entering and theft in the Manawatu • district.

following sentences were imposed: Cyrd Anderson (fifteen charges)' and Trembath (fifteen charges), detention in a .-Borstal institution for a period not exceeding two years; Sherlock ' Anderson (nine charges), eighteen months reformative detention: Diekson (one charge), twelve' months' reformative detention, v

Counsel for the four prisoners submitted that with the exception of one offence there was a moral excuse for the series of crimes. ■ The young men had been living together in a-: large household, and only one,' Tiembath,:had been in regular employment. The offences were committed With the intention of obtaining- food for the household. -. ,

His Honour said., that such articles as jewellery- and silk were not food. Counsel said that the prisoners were tempted to take those articles'. All the stolen goods had been recovered. Probation was entirely out of the question, said his 'Honour. It seemed to him that Cyril Anderson and Tiembath were likely to-benefit by a term in a Borstal institution, where they would have to submit to discipline and be taught to work.' Sherlock- Anderson was a grown man who should have known better. Discipline and hard work were necessary in his case also. In regard to Diekson, his Honour said he must accept the statement that he was guilty of only one offence. He could not help feeling, however, that Diekson was indirectly concerned in the other offences.
