"POTCHIM,AT LEICESTER'
.' Mr,-jßoyd. Davisj.formerly of'Auckknd, won,-the Prince of Wales' Plate, one and a half- miles, at Leicester on' 30th March with xPofcniih. ' "Sporting Life" states that ".the ■ owner saw the race, from the members', enclosure • and, to the amusement''of onlookers, whistled iiis horse home, just as he does when they are galloping at Devizes. It is Mr. Davis' firm belief that his horses know the whistle, aa he uses it when he wishes them to nc-celerate in their work. If Mr. Davis cannot be induced to sell Potchim, he may enter him next year for the Melbourne Cup, as he- is contemplating a visit to ]S"ew Zealand.
Dooley, also, owned by Mr. Davis, started favourite for the Newbury Spring Cup, one mile, on 9th April, but after being'one.of :the. early leaders, began to drift about three furlongs from the. post, and finished. ninth. " The winner, Abbots Worthy/ dashed into the barrier before the. start, unseating his. jockey, Gordon Richards,-1 and bolting the full'length' of the course.- This caused:his price to case, but he: won the race convincingly ' after Richards had reserved ""him for his -run until .well-inside the distance. ; . vThere' was ; a ■ letter. in. the Newbury weighing' i-odm- with.Mr.; Davis' plwto-graph-on the cover; and" the only address was "Somewhere ■ in- Racing Land, Englaritl." .^gln pencil- was scribbled:' '■"Try Newbury.": The 'letter'was duly 'claimed by the-.ou-ner of Dooley.' ■ '
