RACING AT TE RAPA

WAIKATO'S WINTER MEET

SOME HORSES IN FORM

. In deciding to hold an extra day's racing, the Waikato Racing Club was pro-' bably ambitious, but 'so far as matters' have gone it ■would seem that the Northern club is in for a profitable meeting. The entries received were exceedingly large and the acceptances heavy, so that, .the club appears to be already "on the "way to making-a'.■profit: The extra fix-' ture is set down for to-morrow. TJie roomy course at Te Eapa is the venue of the- fixture, with every' indication of the going being on the heavy ; side. Many owners have taken advantage of the opportunity of giving their horses a run on the flat or over the obstacles^ with a view to completing their preparation for the more important meeting, at EUerelie opening on 3rd '■■ June. • On the flat the main- event is the 'Winter Handicap,; in which. Little Doubt's good form in the-Egmont sprints and his subsequent win at Wanganui. (entailing as it did but a small rise in weight) points to his being hard to beat, especially as he M-ill ;find^tß&c~o'nditions'to his liking. Last winter/Lft'tle Doubt won the handicap eachi- day.' ', Sing's Archer and Eager Rose would appear to be his most : dangerous opponents, but Sunny, Sky is an improving performer. . Little Doubt certainly appears to stand right oat with his light penalty. . . ' • . - The fact "that winners of the Waikato Steeplechase and tho Open Hurdles willrender them, liable to a rebandicap for the big Ellerslie .jumping events rather complicates the position in' these races. : -■' In the Steeplechase, Make Up and ;Laudtaark form a strong pair; bracketed as they.are, the former haying already gained a, penalty of 41b for his Hawera'win.,Both are possibilities, but,' after the Hawera experience, Make Up, whose chance m the Great Northern Steeple-" . chase is highly rated, may take on the Hurdles to-morrow, leaving Landmark to> contest the Steeplechase. Of course this! is only conjecture.,' Wiltshire is a fit horse! .and his Egmont funning was impressive. Lucess is forward enough, - but on the] other hand, Claremore, a splendid jumper,:] may want a race, and in any case he is a 1 somewhat' doubtful starter. Foxhound and Slump are weir enough placed, and St.Warrigal, a spectacular fencer, is to have' his first' outing for a' long-time. : TKe Cprry bracket seems the most formidable proposition, particularly should • the • pair both start. ■-'■ •,..... ■ ■ if - Cruachan, who won so nicely the seci ond day --at Hawera, figures in the Opent Hurdles, and he has a good chance. Others'' that will "be. fancied are Standfast • and Luminary, and this trio are expected to" fight it out to-morrow. Among x Vaz remainder there are nevertheless also prospects in the Corry-bracket again, also Prmqe Lv and Nassock. -The minor events have filled exceptionally well. There will now be no division . in the opening event, the Fairfield Handicap. -- .: -':-';-- "■ • -.-■"■."■'.•, ; ■ "Form horses, engaged to-morrow are the -following:— .--.
