MATCHES AT NELSON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ■ < NELSON, 16th April. In the opening matches of the Nelson Rugby Union championship to-day Nelson defeated Pirates by 19 points to 5 after a bright game. Pirates scored first, D. Max and L. Max combining to open the scoring with a, try. Nelson's points came from splendid combination among the backs and accurate place-kicking by Reed-. S. and F. Stewart, Nelson i>acks, were the pick of the players for the town teaih, and the brothers. Max and Newman for Pirates. , Old Boys defeated Waimea in the country by 8 points- to 3. The'standard of play was good for the opening of the season. Spelman and Snodgrass were the best players on the field.
