INTRUDER CAUGHT
DOG GIVES. .THE ALARM (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evenjng Post.) PALMEKSTON JST., This Day. '~ For the fourth time in a short period ;i small .grocery store at Uokowhitu, a suburb of Palmerston.' North, was broken into during the' early hours of yesterday -morning, but, on." this occasion,- the intruders were not so suecessj ful, and, owing to the vigilance of the owner, one of the young men responsible for the- most recent of the occurrences was caught. ' Mr. H. J. Kjar, who conducts a grocery business *bn-' the corner of Albert street and' terrace— near the Ilokowhitu School—and who lives-in the former street close to the premises, had his suspicions aroused shortly after midnight on Monday morning by the .barking of a dog. Having on two previous occasions lost about £30 in stock, Mr. Kjar was naturally suspicious/ and decided to visit his store to make sure that all was safe and-sound1. ■ On arrival he discovered' that the lock :on' the back door of the shop had been broken and, apparently having taken cover at his approach, two youths were noticed1 .crouching in,'" th,e gate.way." -'."■ '."'■'' ' *:"- ' ■'■' -: ''■ ■' . .The intruders'wereVat first peaceful on being apprehended, but- subsequently .attempted to break free. Mr. Kjar caught hold of both of them, but in the ensuing struggle one of the intruders escaped. Tho police were notified, and'the youth who had been detained was arrested. :'.-.." • Before Mr. J ; L. Stout, S.M.. in the Palmerston North Magistrate's' Court yesterday morning, James Flannagan, aged-17 years, was charged with breaking and' entering by night the store of Harold, Joseph "Kjar, Albert street. On the application of Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse, a-remand was granted until' Monday next. ' ' ' \ •'.
