HUTT ROAD SPEEDS

. , MOTORISTS CONFUSED - '"TRAP fOR- VISITORS" , Further efforts to secure a speed limit of 35 m.p.h. from the Thorndon overhead railway bridge to Ngahanranga (excluding the restricted area at Kaiwarra) are. being made by the "Wellington Automobile Club. At'last night's meeting of the dub the chairman, Mr. E. A. Batt, said that the present speeds on the Hutt road were confusing even to regular users, but to visitors they were a regular trap. c Excessive speeds of "motor buses between Thorndon and Ngahauranga -were referred to in a report by two of the club's service officers wh.o followed four buses over this stretch on 29th March. According to the speedometer-_of the car used "by the service officers the speeds of the buses were:— x Bus 99, 33 to U in.p.h., south to north. , , .v BwkIOI,- 29 to ,30 m.p.h., north to south. ~ \ Bud'loo, 32-to 34 nupA., south to north. ' " - ""• i< I Bus 102, 35 to 46 m.p.hVnorthUo south. , ' s In Kaiwarra,'continued the report where tho ,speed limit was'2o'm!p.h. the lowest speed of-any one of the buses was 23 m.p.h.' The others travelled through. Kaiwarra at' about 25 m.p.h. Mr. "Batt said it^was obvious- that the buses wero "exceeding the limit very considerably and were> simply pounding the road to pieces. However, they seemed to<be allowed to go unchecked. After referring to the fact that tho speed on the wide portion of the Hutt road was less than that on the narrow, Mr. Batt said that the present vaiying speeds were unsatisfactory. The speed from tho overhead bridge should be increased. Ho agreed, however, that the speed limit should remain the same as it * was along the stretch in front of the oil stores. It was stated by the tho secretary that the club already had an application before the City Council for a, uniform speed from Thorndon -to Petbne. Tho meeting decided that similar representations should bo-made to-thc Highways Board. - ~ -- „
