ROAD TO MILFORD

THROUGH FINE SCENERY ■ Progress on the iiew road from Lake Te Anau Hotel up the Eglinton Valley, the. ultimate object of which is to provide road^access to Milford Sound, has been satisfactory. The work is being done by the unemployed, and is a credit to them, says a recent southern visitor. Leaving Lake Te Anau. at To Anau Downs^'the road follows up tho Eglinton Eiver until it is some five miles to the right of the lake. The road formatioruig now. rather more than abreast of Glade House on Lake To Anau, and ia only four miles short of Lake Gunn. Passing Lake Gunn and Lake Fergus, :;crb, ising the Fergus Saddle' at 1000 feet the road will follow the Hollyfoird JBiyer to the Gertrude' Saddles A party of s'bushmen- and roadmakers -is simultaneously engaged in making a road up the Gleddan from Milford Sound to the Gertrude Saddle, which is approximately 3700 feet above sea level. This is the point where a tunnel, will be necessary it, is considered. A track over the, saddle, even if it could be blasted out of the sheer sides with success, would be subject, to avalanches. There are two proposals, one a; 1200 feet tunnel for motor-cars, and the other one of some 30 chains, which would serve for horses. ' "What will ultimately be done is not at all certain, but the route when it is practicable to open it up at some future date will pass through very fine scenery. ./..'
