NEW ZEALAND DUEL
AMMON RA-NIGHTMARCH
(From "Vedette.")
SYDNEY, 23rd March.
The Ammon Ra-Nightmarcb. clash in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick on Saturday was decidedly interesting. Ammon Ra won, but he was all out and then had only half a length to spare. Certainly he made practically all his own running and set a fast pace, in addition' to which he had a 71b penalty, but his effort set doubts in the minds of his sturdiest St. Leger admirers. Nightmarch lost the race about a furlong from home. R. Reed tried to come through on the inside of Johnnie Jason, but there was not sufficient room and Nightmarch had to force his way through. It was obvious that pushing Johnnie Jason out of his path was distasteful, and he slowed up a little. Once clear, he came on again, but it was too late. There is not much doubt now that Nightmarch will win the long weight-for-age races at Randwick. He has come back as well as ever. He has worked well since Saturday and looks in great buckle.
