ST LEGER TO PETER JACKSON

ANTIQUE WINS AUTUMN HANDICAP

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") ' AUCKLAND, 28th March. The concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting was held in fine weather. There was "a'fair attendance. The track was heavy afterrain. The totalisator investments were £30,803 10s, as compared with £53,516 10s on the second day last year, a decrease of £22,713. The figures for the meeting were £64,848 10s, compared with £102,317 last year, a decrease of £37,468 10s. OUTSIDER TAKES NELSON HANDICAP. Good Idea,'at double tigures, came from a good .-way back, to win the Nelson Han-, tlieapj.froto . .(arand Spirit and Alpina. L'Allegro, Who' had made most; of the running from Exaggeration and Imamint,* was fourth, and then followed Hiata and Lord Val. Hiata looked likely when he ran round on the outside to take the lead, just as the'field straightened up, .but he weakened in the. last half-furlong. .Lord. Val was steadied by his;weight -on the soft track, but Grand Spirit finished strongly from the rear. . GREEK GOLD AGAIN. Greek Gold, the favourite, had no difficulty in repeating his first day's success in the Victoria Handicap. After waiting on Miss Lorraine to the turn he came away to win hands down from La Moderne and Inflation, whose effort was a good one with hiss big weight on the soft track. Sea Ruler had every chance, but could only finish a. moderate fourth, and the others were well beaten. Greek Gold is a big youngster who is just coming to his best form. ■•■ '.. . HURDLES TO STANDFAST. Patiently ridden, Standfast followed St. Ames, Patutahi, Cargen, and Biform into the straight;in the St. Heliers Hurdles, and-he took ; .charge at the last fence to score convincingly from Patutahi, ..with St. Ahies, third and Biforrh fourth. . Kinsel. Principal, and Full Measure fell. Standfast- is racing very consistently over hurdles, and looks like-being a good one for the winter meetings. Biform again ran a solid race,/and he is also likely to be very Useful" through the winter. • • ANTIQUE'S GOOD' PERFORMANCE. : Antique,- the! fourth fancy at;a good price, was responsible for an exceptionally good performance in winning the Autumn Handicap with 9vß. Antique wasMn ninth position until three furlongs' .from homeland.then made.a sharp <Jash on'the outside rourul ,the turn and stßaiigKtened up almost: leyel.with the, leaders, Speedmint, Royal Artist, Catoma, and -Awaken, who were ."abreast., ;- Taneriri was; following Antique at this stage,l and; he cthen made a sudden, dash to the front, while Gray took 'Antique over to:' the rails. Taneriri was clear at the distance, but Antique finished with wonderful grit on the fence to win .by a head. Great Star, who appeared to get a check at the turn, where he lost a little ground, was Wo lengths away third, and Awaken, was fourth. Antique's performance was highly^ meritorious. BILLY BOY FENCES WELL. • Bil]y. Boy,, fifth favourite m a field of seven, gave a fine exhibition of fencing to win the Autumn Steeplechase from the favourite,. King's Counsel. Billy Boy followed Slump for most of the way, and assumed command half a mile from home." Just- after jumping the last, fence lie; was.headed, by King's Counsel, but came" (again- to score by half a length.' /Copey, .^hoj-hit a couple of fqnces: hard,; weakened ■#.-'tjte;',efic£ after being right 'in!' it^atejOie' second to last fence/* and' Nassoe&vplpdded' on well tos- get £ ourih. . Master \Lu -Ifeli- at the second- fene^r-fr:-/^^ •. ■' ':■'-• '■','■■'< peter Jackson! a hot FAybuRiTE. Peter Jackson was backed down to odds on:, for the St. Leger, but he had to be ndden/right out to beat Gibraltar by a neck. Flower made play for njne furlongs at an easy pace, and Gibraltar then made a sharp dash on the outside. Peter Jackson then slipped through on the fence and turned for/home just in front of Gibraltar. They were together at the distance, where Peter Jackson rolled on to Gibraltar when his rider drew the whip. A great tussle ensued, and Peter Jackson ust prevailed. The others were well beaten, and View Halloo was a very moderate third. The slow pace early suited Gibraltar, who gave the winner a very hard. race. : , '.."..—■-' CHRQMADYNE SPREADEAGLES THE ■'. ■'.-.C-;;V<^.'. ■ FIELD.. ' . It is some time since Chroruadyne had :he opportunity of racing on a soft track, but .he showed his ' appreciation of such conditions by spreadengling the field in the Huia Handicap. Rounding the home urn he was fairly . wide out behind brolden Wings, Leitrim, Huntingdon, Tea Hampton Park, and Easter Time but over the last furlong'"he made no ™cc of J* to' win by two lengths from b-olrien Wings, who beat Huntingdon by a length. Easter Time, who should win p01?' ££?'ri^u up iourth» and Hampton , \ bl th- ' was at nearly double-figisre odds. ■ .•..'■ OUTSIDER TAKES LAST RACE. ,Tw ° outsiders disputed the finish in ■he Islington, Handicap, and Imperial Prince gamed the verdict by half a head from Cruachan, with Llanore a fair :nird. Autumn Sun was fourth, and the favourite, Sunny Sky, was fifth. Sunny bky looked to have a good winning chance at the turn, but stopped in the run home Cruachan was ridden without judgment' and should have won. Half a mill from home he was not in the first eight but ran up last on the outside to lead into the straight.. Pomp and pj jr went wU tor about six furlongs and then retired.
