AUCKLAND WINS CANTERBURY RUNNERS-UP The finals of the swimming championships in the inter-University tournament were decided at the Tepid Baths at the Boys Institute last evening. The preliminaries were held on Saturday. Auckland were the winners of the swimming, but Canterbury were close behind second. i\ either Wellington nor ' Otago did well No records were broken. -The best pertormer m the men's section was D. H iiTf' ™ 9 anterbury'-' "Symes.-Von the 110 yds, 220 yds, and 440 yds championships, the 440 yds being won in the good time of 6mm 12 3-ssec. In the women's section; Misses J. Thomson and E. Steele (Auckland) and Miss \. Levvey (Canterbury) " showed out. Miss N. Webber, by winning the 66 2-3 yds women s breaststroke championship, gained Wellington's only win. Ihe contests were closely watched by many spectators. The various university colleges gave their hakas, and the winners ot the swimming events were loudly cheered. An exhibition of fancy diving was given by J. Penman and H. X; Waters and Miss -N. Hodgkins. A novelty event caused much amusement.
