WELLINGTON MEETING

STEADY PROGRESS

Few thrills fell to spectators at the AVellington Lawn Tennis Association's Easter tournament at Miramar Grounds on Saturday, the steady progression towards the finals being unmarked by any surprises. The men's singles were distinguished only by the stern tussle which R. W. Lander,' the well-known hurdler, gave W. E. Hollings in the second set 'of their match and by the nice strokes revealed by. G. McLeod, a visiting young player, who" fan A. E. Sandral about in the first set of their match, Sandral finally clinching the set only at 12-10. G. Lezard met a promising player in S. W. Hicks, a left-hander who showed signs of brilliance and clipped the corners with a beautiful forehand, but Lezard's experience told in the long run. In the women's singles Miss M. Whyte, the North Island, singles and doubles champion, going on to play Miss Taylor, a prominent Taranaki player, late in the afternoon, lost the first set 1-6, and had just equalised the set. score with a win at 6.-4 when abandonment of the match was ordered because of the failing light. In the mixed doubles G.Xezard and Miss D. Howe opened strongly against Sandral and' Miss Whyte, winning the first set and leading 4-2 in the second, but losing second and third sets to their opponents' crushing net offensive, Sandral covering earlier errors by a string of clever shots.
