VALUABLE ORCHIDS
RACING CLUB'S GIFT
The offer to the city of the valuable collection of orchids at the- Ellerslie Racecourse, together with the orchidgrowing house and equipment, for removal to the Auckland Domain, was made by the committee of the Auckland Eaeing Club in a letter received by the Auckland City Council last week (states the "New Zealand Herald"). The only condition attached to the offer was that the council should undertake the cost of dismantling and removing the orchid house.
The City Engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, estimated that the cost of dismantling the house and re-erecting it in the Domain Gardens would be £.303.
The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, moved that the offer be accepted with thanks and that the Parks Committee make arrangements for the- transfer of the house-and plants to a suitable site in the Domain. He said the gift was a very generous one, as the plants alone were worth many thousands of pounds. He believed the house cost something like £15,000. There would be no difficulty in looking after the collection at the Domain. It was probable that a site would be found in the propagation department.
Mr. G. L. Taylor, chairman of th'o j. Jarks Committee, said the collection was the finest in the Southern Hemisphere. ' The council staff would see that it was displayed to the very best advantage.
The motion was carried
