CORNWELL CUP

PRESENTED BY MAYOR

WINNERS CONGRATULATED

The presentation of the Cornwell Cup to the winning crew, W. Tissiman and R. Hendry, representing Lyttelton, took'place in the Council Chamber, Town Hall, on Saturday.afternoon in the presence o£ the other crews, contest officials, and local yachting supporters. •

;Mr.O. A. Moller, eh airman o!£ the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association; said that the'contest < had been carried out in a manner Vortliy of its ideal. The crews were_ younger than in previous years, but.they had shown all the qualities of former Competitors. They had emerged from a contest Bailed for- the most part in boisterous . weather with credit to themselves and their boats. The fact' that in the: nine' races with .. eight boats Tacing there had been only six capsizes showed that the boats had- proved themselves in about the worst weather experienced ,for. any" contest. The^adniiriistrators Tiaturally felt very.-proud., of "the. fine showing made and-the sporting spirit in which the races were sailed. .

In'presenting, the cup to the winning sKOTper,. Tissiman, the Mayor (Mr., T. p. A. Eistop) .said it had been, as.-they?had hoped; a good; -vigorous, and .sporting contest from .beginning, to end,- won only after; almost a record number of races. The- cup* had previously ' been held by Auckland on seven occasions'and once by Lyttelton. Mr. Hislop congratulated the winners on their fine performance and the 'defeated crews on their- sporting fight; for supremacy;' No one,. he said, would be more proud: than Mr. J. Mackay, of Auckland, who had'trained Tissiman a^ well as the winners of every previous contest' except one. In the.' general, order | issued"-'by: Lord Jellicoe after, .the. -Battle lo'f Jutland, in .which John,'Travers Corn- ! T^el! was mortally wounded,' was the following tribute' which; had: been inscribed on the- cup: - "His example .was : an^ inspiration to the boys, of the, British Em|pire for all time,' Young as' he .was, neither his wounds nor' the death of all I around him- induced him to leave: his post. There* he remained, thinking only of his duty." The.boys who received' the cup could take' inspiration from :. those words for their everyday life, and- they would then-be worthy to hold the trophy,; which; perpetuated the'memory of a gallant sailori boy; ;■;'■-•: :

: Three cheers Were given for the-Lyttel-ton boys; • - ■'. Replying,, Tissiman thauked the. speakers for their remarks and urged the other crews to put into practice all they had learned from Mr. Mackay and others so that the clip would go round the various ports; ' !,.... !.■ '■ : ' ,;:::- ■•■'

The Lyttelton delegate; Sir. Jv T^ Hbbbs; gave an assurance that the hospitality1 at the next contest would be in- every way on a footing with that' received, in Wellington. The racing had been prolonged and it had been a strenuous week for the crews and delegates, but they had nothing but kind memories" of the contest.

Mr. Mackay, spoke on behalf-of the defeated crews,; mentioning that the races had been sailed in all, weathers and the Lyttelton boys had- won in light, heavy, and moderate conditions, proving conclusively that they were the best crew.

Cheers by the other:, boys for the winners and the singing of the National Anthem concluded the function. .
