AMERICA'S ACTION
FLEET TO STAND BY
PROTECTION OF LIFE
WASHINGTON, 30th January.
On the heels of the vigorous protest by the United States and Britain against the Japanese attack on Shanghai, the Navy Department to-day ordered the Asiatic fler' to stand by iv readiness to protect United States lives. "Our fleet," Admiral Pratt said, "will be ready to evacuate our nationals or protect them if a crisis arises. Where mob rule prevails our forces will go in and take whatever steps arc necessary to protect our people."
He also said that ships of the battle1 force would leave San Diego on Monday on winter manoeuvres o:" Hawaii as scheduled, but would not go beyond there at present.
Eight destroyers are being prepared at Manila to leave at a moment's notice. Four are en route from there to Shanghai.
