NEW PLYMOUTH NOTES

LADY QUEX AND ORAPAI

(Special from "Hurry On,")

NEW PLYMOUTH, 30th January. With tho. Eginont Meeting only a few'daysoffi the/Now Plymouth .track is bearing abusy appearance; arid moat of tho. horses1 aro,;acquittLng tliemsclvcs; well,-..;. Owing 'to!".:,:tho continued" .dry spoil tho grass;tracks are very hard/aivd only.: tlie .two-year-olds •;arb\-bei»gVgal'-lope'd there, all the other'horses being ..wd.rked on the plough, .wliich>-' though. fast,:ts.in'good, order..;- '

■' All contiuues to go well with Lady Quex, and though she has not been asked to do her best slie contmuea to-re-qord smart times whenever she-gallops. On Thursday morning she dashed over half a milo in easy style in 49Jsee, and she could have improved on this. She ,appears to bo very favourably,. treated in tbo Flying'Handioap. at Hawera, and with H.: Gray in -the saddle promises to start a warn? favourite. She is::meeting Laughing Prince oa seven pounds better terms than she will be doing ia. the Taranaki. Stakes, and if she is going to havo a ehanco of winning that event she will have to make a favourable showing against tho Quantock horse : on "Wccltiosciay. liady.^)ijcx;'a. l ßtabl& aate, Boy.al Financs, has had iio fast work since Stratford, but she seems to.bo -benefiting as the; result of her swimming exorcise. She does best on a- light, preparation, and may 3nakQ-.,her presence felt in. races before long. She went a great race behind Gold Dawn and Tradesman at Stratford on the second day. Gold Dawn has been doing very little sprinting, and her work suggests that long journeys will be her missious shortly. With the exception of Tuesday, when she was beaten by Orapai over a fast run five furlongs, she has been doing sieady 3 solid, tnree-quarter-pacs work over a mile and a mil© and a quarter. However, her connections have decided to give her another race over the sprint distanco at Hawera beforo tackling longer races. Orapai is doing all that J. O'Neill is asking, of. him in great stylo, and appears better at present than he has over been before. He beat Gold Dawn-com-fortably over five furlongs ,on. Tuesday morning, breaking linin lsee; for th« distance, and did his task in : great style. Though it-may bo too much to expect aim to beat Xady Quex-at a difference of ten pounds on Wednesday, ho should not be Jong in scoring. a win. All the two-year-olds—Merry Way, Glowlight, and March Alone—are doing nicely. Merry Way would seem to be tho most Ukely for Hawera. , This Arausio filly has improvod since Stratford, and her track work has been most encouraging. It is possible that »ho may not start on the first day, but will certainly have a race at ■ the meeting. All going well she. will be a startw in the Taranaki Stakes, and, aided by her light weJgSt,; : Blie may Joad the older horses a merry dance for five furlongs. Glowlight and March Alone are nlso doing better, and there is a possibility that the latter-may also start in the Stakes, as Sis owner is anxious to see bow he shapes over, six furlongs. / little kiD6ubt is again .galloping-■well; and was finishing on well at the end of seven furlongs in lmin . 32$ sec on Thursday.: morning. In view of his recent failures, ■ however,, he is • not likely to carry much local support in his engagements at Hawera unless there should happen to be a wet track on the day. He does not seem to be able to produce his best when the ground is hard,
