FEW SURPRISES

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

HAMILTON, Friday. Success fat- bejoiul expectations attended the New Zealand rowing championships and carnival regatta, held at Hamilton' to-djy. There was a lecord attendance, estimated at over GOOO, nearly 1000 people travelling on the special train fiom Auckland. Ideal, weather conditions prevailed, though a stiff breeze later in the day made the centre of the course rather choppy. Theie were few suipiises in the championship events. It was anticipated that W. lurner, the single sculls champion, would iose his title on recent form, though the sterling exhibition of R. Smith (Waitemata) was unexpected and created great enthusiasm. C. Campbell (Aromoho) did not race. The big event uas timed to fctau jt 12.43 p.m., but a collision among the Napioi, Tauranga, and Auckland sculleib caused minor clamagd to the boats, anil it was made last on the programme. tr- bt. Clair, the Hamilton candidate, rowed o great race, but proved too touch of a veteran. WELLINGTON BELOW STANDARD. Hamilton had no trouble in annexin" tie champion senior four- the other classic event, carrying not' only substauii n > pri2e mollev b"t albo the coveted Jlallibutton-Johnstone trophy. The home crew took charge: early and never dropped fi canvas. Half uay Petone led North i iir Aramoh °. and St. George's, but the Wellingtoniaus ■nere not up to standard against the stiff current. In fact, the unusual river conditions appeared to be unsettling to several of the visiting cious accustomed to harbour racing and proved that nidie than a tew days' train"Jß °" the spot is required. The Wairau IJJlcnneiin) ciew rowed a splendid race and extended themselves fully in an effort to overtake the champions befoio the position looked i hopeless. A DESERVED WIN. C. Stiles and P. H. Thompson came all tue uay Uom Christehurch to win the pair oar championship, and will' not return disappointed, While deserving their win thoroughly, the Avon oarsmeu were very nearly ."pipped"' by the Hamilton pair, whose biilliaut effort will be lons remembered. A feature of the lace was the splendid recoveiy of the Star (Wellington) crew, (t. (J. Cooke and F. H. Mullins, who appealed to be a bad third'in tho caily atages. They weighed in to draw level with Avon and Hamilton when about half a mile from home. A. K. G. Jackson and E. O. Trail piloted Wanganui Union to victory in the championship double, sculls. It was a stiaight-out win from Hamilton, who were bustled by Tauranga tor second place. Two southern clubs figured piominently in the consolation': fours for crews unplaced iv the championship fours. For the first half-mile the race looked a moral win for St. George's until Aramoho and Wairau showed stores of leserve energy, the latter. crew narrowly defeating the Wanganui men near the winning post. North Shore competed keenly with Arainoho for second- place. MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUB. Hamilton was the most successful club on the day, with two firsts and seven seconds.
