A party 6f~ seven visitors who had not made the ascent of Euapehu before, accompanied by tho guide, left Tho Chateau at 6.15 a.m. Three members, of the''party carried bathing.suits and towels with the express intention of having a swim in tho lake. Perfect weather favoured them from the start, and the ascent to the crater lake was made in a little under seven hours. _ "Whilo tho three bathers wore occupied with the steep descent of 400 feet to the level of the lake, the remainder of the party watched them from above. The bathers stated that the water was fairly cold, and had a sulphury taste. -One of them tried-the depth of the lake not far out from the edge, but it was too deep to touch the botI torn. .
