NEW RULES PROPOSED

SMALLER YACHTS

The America Cup was kept alive by the personality of Sir Thomas Lipton. Now that ho is dead all interest in the cup seems to have died. The North American Yacht Racing Union is therefore to propose that the America Cup he replaced by. another international trophy, for twelve-metre boats, says the London "Daily Telegraph." It is pointed out by the union that, owing'to the tremendous cost of building large yachts, it is very improbable thero will be any more challengers from Great Britain. Other countries are not interested in tho big yacht races, andiso'it is proposed to widen tho international appeal by holding a twelve-metre race, in which the old America Cup will be at stake. Tho cup will be held by the winning country uutil it is lost to another country, and every winning country will receive a replica Major B. Heckstall Smith, the "Daily Telegraph" yachting correspondent, wrote; "Whilst I would not go so far as to.say that an international trophy for 12-motro yachts, or any trophy, could ever take tho place of tho America Cup—which has been held by America for eighty years— there is no. doubt that the 12-metre class is a most economical type of racing yacht.
