MACDONALD'S COMMENT

LAUSANNE CONFEEENCE

MORE THAN EVER NECESSARY

(British Official Wireless.) (Received 12th January, 11 a.m.) ' ETJGBY, 11th January. The Prime Minister, Mr. Mac Donald, on returning from Chequers last night commented in an interview upon1 Dr. Bruening's statement that Germany's situation rendered a continuation of political payments impossible, and that any attempt to continue such a system was bound to lead to trouble not only for Germany, but for tho wholq world. Mr. Mac Donald, who had previously had a 1 conversation with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, and the Foreign Secretary, Sir John. Simon, said that the policy and point of view of His Majesty's Government could be announced only at the proper place aiid time. In tho meanwhile it might bo said that in view of tho economic problems of Germany it was not unlikely that some such declaration as that of Dr. Bruening's would bo made at the Lausanne Conference. The fact that it had already been made rendered that Conference more necessary than ever, for it was impossible to leave things as they were. The present situation was the, result of international agreements, and an international conference was therefore necessary to deal with it. Mr. Mac Donald said that he was sure that it would be found that all the Governments concerned realised that European recovery and appeasement depended upon a recognition of the bare facts.

It is anticipated that the Cabinet meeting arranged for to-day to consider tho statement the Prime Minister will make at the concluding of the Burma Conference to-morrow, will also consider the reparations' situation in the light of Dr. Brucning's statement.
