MORE HEAVY RAIN

SATURDAY'S CRICKET

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 11th January. A spell of fine weather was broken on Saturday when after a dull morning, ram fell lato in the afternoon, and continued heavily during the evening. Up to 9 o'clock on Sunday morning 1.34 inches.fell-, and a heavy shower on Sunday afternoon brought the fall in the 24 hours iip to 9 o'clock this morning to .04 of an inch. Heavy rain must have fallen in the hills yesterday, for the Maitai and Brook rose duriug the afternoon, and in the evening they were both in hair-fiood. The water rose enough in the Maitai to flood over the ilats in the lower, stretches of the Maitai Valley. In the Brook parts of the banks which were loosened by the December floods were washed away a little further, but the damage is only minor. At one place the gas main was damaged. To-day was fine and warm. The Rev. A. : J. Rogers, of Stoke, who has been in.England under engagement to a church society for the past, two years, has returned. His duties took him' to various parts of Great Britain, the Continent, Palestine, and Egypt. Newman took : five wickets for '22 runs off 17' overs. Being 142 runs behind Old Boys' first innings score oi 212, Athletic followed on, compiling 114 —-Kinzett 33 . and Pike 44 being the highest scorers: S. -NpVvinan took three wickets for 9 runs off sjs. overs. In-the first-day's play between Old 'Boyscolts : and Wakatu, colts scored 119, their opponents 'replying with the small totakof 43.,.The second,day's play saw ■col.ts score 208 for four wieTtets (declared), leaving Wakatu 284 behind. When three wickets fell.for 35 it;looked as if colts wolild win outright, but several good stands by Wakatu made it a win on tho- first, innings. A feature of the game was a chanceleSs 102 not out scored by A.. Newman for..colts. He hit seventeen fours. J. Simpson scored 31 and Spellman 32. The chief contributors to Wakatu's 167 for four wickets were N. Biggs 47 hot out, N. Wilkes 51, and R. Marshall 31 not out. The senior cricket .championship table at present is:—Old Boys 16, Old.
