COUNCIL HAS NO POWER.
■ The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) said. 4hat=the council had no power to1 lease the land, which was a domain. All the council could do was to grant a licence for people to continue to occupy the land.- The council could not purchase any lof the properties^ .In reply to the deputation, the Mayor stated that the representations which had been made would be fully considered by the council, and the residents affected would be advised of the council's decision. There,were certain legal; restrictions on the land, and the council would have to find out; its exact position before making any decision. Councillor J. Burns: "There will be no. evictions in the meantime?"
