CHINA'S FLOOD

A journey by air from Nanking to Hankow after the- Chinese floods is like an ocean flight, says the Shanghai correspondent olT the- London "Daily Telegraph." From Nanking onwards there is water as far as tho cyo can reach, under which lie countless villages and huudrcdi of small towns. Junks now sail over them without any obstruction. It is a spectacle which is both magnificent and appalling. It is magnificent because it is a sen of 10,000 islands — every Yangtso valley hilltop now being an islet. It is appalling because each island shelters numbers of refugees who are trapped and out of reach of help. We flew low over a typical island. It was covered with people like flies. For tho most part they wero without protection from, the pitiless sun. They were apparently without food. The ouly water to drink was tho yellow flood water which the wind was whipping into waves that broke at their feet. They had no boats and were without hope. There aro hundreds of thousands similarly marooned. Hundreds of thousands arc doomed. It would need 1000 powerful motor-boats, working from ships stationed at intervals all the way from. Nanking to Hankow, to rescuo all who aro marooned. Hankow is an appalling sight from the air. Half the city is under water. _ Only the top floors of the higher buildings are now above tho flood level, and the city of 1,000,000 peoplo appears to be reduced to tho size of a village. AUCTIONS.
