PENALTY FOR BQOKMAKING
PLEA DISREGARDED
STEATFOBD, 7th December, Fines of £300 each were imposed r. E. W. Tate, S.M., on Domini aaricb. Felix Pobrica, and Willii
Fines of £300 each were imposed by Mr. E. W. Tate, S.M., on Dominick Sisaricb, Felix Pobrica, and William Henry Lash for bookmaking. The charges were tbe sequel to police raids on Ist October. All of the defendants pleaded guilty.
Counsel for the defence made a strong plea for a lesser penalty, and referred to the law as hypocritical.
Evidence was given by the Town Clerk as to the excellent characters of Sisarich and Pobrica;
The Magistrate said tho Court was not concerned with the actions of the Legislature. The police and the Court had to administer the law, not to criticise it. He declined to reduce the penalties, Walter Ernest- Watking was ordered to pay eight shillings and costs on a charge of being found in a common gaming-house without, lawful excuse.
The London County Council is promoting legislation to give authority to "seize and destroy or sell or otherwise dispose o£" London pigeons, in order to reduce their number.
