CRICKET FINANCE
GRANTS TO TOURISTS
PLUNKET SHIELD CHARGES
Last season, when only one Plunkct Shield match was played locally, resulted in a loss to the Wellington Cricket Association, and this year, when funds arc exceptionally difficult to raise, the association is faced with the problem of recouping itself after last year's loss, making this season pay, and building up a balance in readiness for another olt season next year. There was consequently considerable discussion at the weekly meeting of the local Management Committee last night, when two appeals for assistance lor travelling trains wore received. The University Club asked for .CIO towards sending a (earn to the Tanmaki district during the Christinas and New Year holidays, and Mr. L. -T. Brabin asked for C.'iO towards sending a tram of cells to play the annual match against Canterbury at Christchnreh. In regard to the University request, Mr. J. S. Hannah favoured the grant being made on the grounds that the club, in visiting country districts, was carrying out a function of the committee and should be helped. The question had been asked as to what the grant, might lead to, and he thought if it led to several other clubs coming forward with the same request the money would be well spent. Other speakers sympathised with Mr. Hannah's point of view, but doubted whether the association had the money to make tha grant. In reply to the chairman, Mr. P. B. Broad, Mr. Brabin said that in addition to the £30, about £7 would be asked in connection with the .visit from the Auckland team. It was proposed to play three matches in the South Island, and the total cost of the tour -would be about £90. ' It wasdecided to make a grant of £30. which will be final, to the colts' team, and to consider the University Club's request at the end of the season. Mr. R. F. Steele said that Dempster had asked" him if it would bo possible to send a cplts' team to play a one-day match in tire Wairarapa before Christmas. The .team would be transported free of charge. Mr. Broad said that it was all a matter of the players obtaining the 'necessary leave, but if a team could be got -together-the-council would be only too pleased to see "the trip eventuate. TIME FOR A REDUCTION. . ."I think.the/time has come when wemust consider making a reduction in our charges," said Mr.- W. J. Christophersen, the. association's- treasurer, when the subject of charges, for the Plunket Shield matches was under consideration. He thought that if the charges were reduced .by. .25 per cent, the takings would increase. -, : It'was decided to charge Is at the entrance to the ground, Is (including tax), to the enclosure, and Is (including tax) to the grandstand. Last year the "public paid .the. tax, and the charges were Is, Is 3d, and Is Id respectively. . ' The selectors (Messrs'. W. A. .Aldersley, L. T. Coberofti- and K. C. -James) are to ■be requested, to..announce the Plunket "Shield'team, -next Monday. A subeomriiittee-; was appointed to go into the question of. umpires for- the Shield matches. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.
