To what extent was the team which j tho selectors chose to meet North Otago-Southland a trial team? .This is a: question which cricketers arc likely to ask themselves, but one would probably not be far wrong in guessing that it was, in the opinion of the selectors, .the best team available (states a Dunedin writer). The omission of R. Cherry was no doubt due to the fact that he is out of town during the week and was unable to play. If one of the younger men were dropped to give him a place, or even if that were'not done, tho side would be a well-balanced and strong one on paper, and if its members played up to what we know is their true form, it should 'be able to hold its own and quite possibly beat anything in New Zealand. Wet weather and lack of practice may be against the side, but if these, players can travel they will give Christchurch and Auckland crowds some good cricket to watch. The team that was chosen was as follows:—Blunt, Badcock, Cavunagh, Dunning (captain), Dickinson, Elmes, Hawksworth, Knight, Moloney, Priest, IX. Smith; twelfth man, D. Cameron. The names include thoso of men who can make plenty of runs and who should secure good bowling figures. With Blunt, Badcock, Dunning, Dickinson, Elmes, ' and Moloney there will be no shortage of bowlers, but if Dickinson cannot travel (and every effort should be mado to see that he does) it seems that Jolly will have to be called upon to supply the speed. Tho team includes the names of two newcomers in Priest and D. Smith, both of whom are showing good form. The latter is a batsman who should perform particularly well if tho games are played on' fast wiekots.
