PHAR LAP SCARES EXPLAINED
(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, sth November. While Phar Lap's defeat in the Melbourne Cup was regarded as someI thing of a tragedy, Sydney has had a wonderful Cup comedy provided by certain newspapers. Phar Lap also played the stellar role in the comedy. Consequent on all kinds of alarming reports, probably inspired by the alleged shooting of last year,. special correspondents piled sensation on sensation. ■ The climax was reached by a solemn allegation that warning, had been received that Phar Lap was to be shot at at all angles. To this was added that poisoned "darts were to be used from an air pistol, the missiles being similar to those used by the Indian tribes who favour that type of weapon. While Melbourne was outraged Sydney smiled, for when: Phar Lap was training at Eaiidwick ho walked down to the course unnoticed by anyone. Guards and police, and threats of poisoned arrows were not even whispered about. / , . The innocent- cause of what has turned out to'be a complete hoax, elaborated by rumour, and accepted by some pressmen, was a telegram sent by a film corporation to its staff in Melbourne. It said simply: "Shoot Phar Lap from all angles." And he was shqt, too. ' '. Picture-goers will see the result.
