WIN FOR TRENTHAM

EPHIALTES ON MERITS

The Trentbam-trained Ephialtes won the Otaio Plate very decisively. He has stood ■up to his hard racing at the meeting in excellent manner, and he thoroughly deserved the success. Perhaps the main factor assisting him to victory was the careful: handling he received from his rider, A. E. Ellis, who had him under control and just where he wanted him all through the race, not letting him go till lie-was fairly straightened up for home. Then when he asked he cut down the loaders in a few of his beautifully measuring strides, and was still going away from everything, at the finish. On Monday he weakened at the. very point at which he was able to play his trump card yesterday. - ■ ~•'.. ■ * It was a good start, btit Mineryal and Royal Love were squeezed out before a hundred yards had been traversed. Charmaine was first to break the line, followed by Pharaoh, Starshooter, Red Racer,. Zeebrugge, Locksley, Ephialtes, .Desert Song, and Atholspear. Charmaine and Bed Racer .were .clear at the half-mile, where Royal Love, made a short move forward but was checked, then Atholspear began a run round the outside. Charmaine and Red Racer were still in front at the straight entrance, with Pharaoh, Zeebrugge, and Locksley next but weakening, and Ephialtes and Atholspear throwing out challenges. So quickly did Ephialtes respond that he was in front ■ outside the distance, and he came on still

going away to beat Atholspear by two lengths. A leugth back Starshooter was third and Charmaine was a close fourth. After a gap came Red Racer, Black Duke, Zeebrugge, Minerva], and Royal Love. ' It was an even-betting race, and although Ephialtes was favourite his price was an acceptable one. Royal Love had a bad run throughout, for after being squeezed back at the start he was again checked when attempting to move up-. His chance thereafter was always hbpeless. Atholspear covered extra ground on the turn, and came, on the outside in the straight, but he never looked like getting near the winner. Starshooter ran a good race throughout, and Charmaine continued to be consistent but without sufficient stamina. - , ■' , .
