SPEEDWAY SEASON
/ OPENS ON SATURDAY. Arrangements have been, completed for the local speedway season, to be commenced with a special afternoon meeting, at the Kilbirnie Stadium on Saturday,.and .-in jdea of the competitive interest in the sport is given' in the very large entries for this meeting. For one event there are thirty-two' entrants, necessitating ■■ eight lieals, four semi-finals, and two demi-semi-fiifmls before the final is decided. Opportunities have beep given the riders of getting into form for this meeting, and at the .practices on.the cinder track at Kilbirnie some excellent showings have been made.' Particularly impressive have been the performances., of last year's A grade riders-and a number of the B grade men, among whom some are showing greatly unpravea form.' 'The newcomers are much more promising this year than ever before,-, and it- is-on the cards that surprises may Come'from: this'quarter. A principal feature of Saturday afternoon's meeting will be a match race series, m which the contestants will be four of New Zealand s leading competitors—C. Tonks, H. Mangham (who is expected to be a regular compotitor in Wellington'this season), A. W. Hunger, and A. G-. Wilkinson. In this contest, which- should be of high standard, Tonks meets Mangham and Hunter meets Wilkinson, the two "winners to ride off in the match final. Phillips, Naylor,_ V. Jinnghfim, Lawton, Appleyard, Santi, and other's have all been doing well in practice, and will liclp to makn the proceedings' interesting at the opening meeting.
