A WIN FOR MOUNT BOA

SHATTER MAKING GOOD

(By Telegraph.)

(Speoial to "The Eveninn Post.") TIHARU, 17th October. The South Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting wns held in. warm weather and with a fair attendance. The course was hard. There was some very interesting sport. The totalisatov investments amounted to £9909 10a, an increase of £813 10s on.the figures for the first d*y of the two-day meeting lust year, held in mid-week and not on the half-holiday. QUINOPAL'S HURDLES. Quinopal was a: warm favourite for the Otaio Hurdles, and he gave his admirers no cause for uneasiness.- Save for about a hundred yards along the back he was in front all the way. Camisader, the second favourite, was in close attendance at the home turn, ' but' Quinopal beat him without an effort. Carinthia, after being closer, up thau usual, finished on in third place, and he may be nearly due. This was QuinopalV third win over hurdles in three starts. . GALLANT FOX EASILY. The three-year-old Gallant Fox was favourite for the Tycho Hack Handicap, and. lie justified the. confidence' of his admirers. Weatherly and Night ' Recital made the early running; but Crash and Pakitere were' 'showing .the. way to the straight, and Gallant Fox at the home turn, with Night Recital and Weathevly handy. Gallant Fox shot out in the straight and won easily, while Weatherly got up-on the post to snatch second money from Pakitere. Close up came Crash and Night Recital, with Distrait next, after a gap. Gallant Vox .won ; in handsome style, and looks, like being a _ good, horse. Moprbird was neverin the picture. WASHDYKE TROT, Plain Silk, the favourite, broke up early in the Waahdyke Trot. Great Antrim led for seven furlongs, and then retired, leaving Gold Spear in charge, with Jean Drusus, Onoto, Te Aike, and Gunfire next. Gold Spear tired in the straight,, and Jean Drusus beat Onoto easily by a length. Gold Spear was three lengths away, with Te Aike close up. MOUNT BOA'S STAKES. Ranelagh set out to win the Spring Stakes from end to end.: He quickly gained a lead of two lengths from Desert Song and Admiral Drake, who were joined by Topere at the end of half a mile.l Mount Boa was not far away at this stage. He moved up on the turn, took the lead in tho straight, and won easily from Admiral Drake, with the tiring 'Danelagh a. length away. Then came Desert Song, who met trouble at the entrance >to the straight, with Royal Love close up. Mount Boa won bo easily that further successes can bei'looked for. HULA BELLE IN FORM. Hula Belle and Monastic led Song Box and Manetho in the early part ,of the Spring Stakes. Hula Belle dropped back a little on the turn, but came on again to beat Monastic easily by a length. Manetho was two lengths away, and looks one to keep in mind. Drumfire was clo«e up, finishing fast on the outside, after a slow start. He is a promising two-year-old by Winning Hit from Scrimmage. The winner, Hula Belle, showed good form in several placed'efforts last season, and she should be worth following. Lily Bingen led practically all the way in the Hadlow Trot, winning easily. Ratloc, the favourite, took second place in the back stretch, but broke badly. GOLD PIT NARROWLY. Gold Pit made nearly all the running in the Kerry town Handicap. Pharaoh appeared to have her measure when the straight was reached, but Gold Pit came on again, winning - narrowly. Adelphi, after being second most of the way, hung on well. Locksley came with a belated run to get fourth. Night Guard was well placed early, but faded out. 'Ramo was never sighted. This was the second recent win ■ for Gold Pit, who looks to have good prospects of staying the Oaks journey. FINAL TO SHATTER. Limited set the pace in the Flying Handicap, but Shatter, who was always handy, shot out in the straight, winning easily, while Rascal headed Limited on the post. Arrowmir was fourth after following the leader to the straight. Shatter will win in much better company and over a longer distance. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
