OBITUARY

.■■Mr* B. 13. Allen, a .former chief clerk of the Government Printing Office, whose death, at the age of 69, was referred to in Saturday's issue, was for many years a prominent chess player in this city, Hia many successes when playuig in telegraphic matches against other centres helped the Wellington Chess Club to attain the honoured place that it still has in New Zealand chess. Later on he joined the Wellington South Club, becoming its president and also its champion. He won the club's Silver Knight trophy outright, and generously handed it back for further competition. He was more than once urged to compete lor the championship; of the Dominion, as he was a very consistent performer and had an accurate stylfe that would "wear well when playing all day long for ten days on end, but his friends never succeeded m persuading him to make a for the silver rook. It may be added that the late Mr. Allen represented the Auckland Chess Club for some years on the New Zealand Chess Association, in which he also held the office of honorary auditor for several terms.
