BACON AND EGGS

CONTINENTAL COMPETITION

(Received 19th October, 10 a.m.)

LONDON, 17th October

Importers of Australian eggs arc having; a difficult task to dispose of them just now, for supplies from all sources are very heavy. Continuance of warm weather allows ; Continental production to be maintained later than usual, and arrivals of Continental eggs in September arc more than double those for Scmptember, 1930. Under these conditions it is quite impossible to maintain the prices realised early in the month, and present values of Australians are 10s Gd to 12s 3d pex\ one -.hundred and twenty eggs. It. is now recognised that- importers made a mistake in rushing the price to 14s, as they did three weeks ngo. At the present figure Australians can be profitably retailed at Bid. Importers are hopeful that.this may stimulate the demand. . , The British housewife can certainly ttipply the breakfast table cheaply now £ecb*con has just been reduced by about ten snillings per cwt, and the wholesale price of best Danish is only about o6s per cwt. This follows a record killing of pigs in Denmark this week. The number killed is 166,500, which is about 20,000 above the previous record. As "The Grocer" newspaper points out, expansion of exports of bacon from Denmark has , been simply marvellous. Poland has also shown a remarkable de 1 velopment of her exports, those for the fi,rst nine months of 1931 amounting to 27,790 tonß, as compared with 10,763 last year. . .

Messrs. Nathan and Trensrou.se, London, 17th October, report: '-Eggs—Some advance in values due to departure gold standard has not been maintained. Supplies are large. Market very quiet. Australian offered 11s to 11s Gd per lons hundred of 120 ?»?«, but. expect improvement demand before long.''
