PETITION TO PARLIAMENT

Legislation ensuring that household commodities and necessities shall be sold at the lowest possible price is sought in a number of petitions which are at present being presented in the House of Representatives. Three more were presented yesterday.

Thero were 4585 signatures on one presented by Mr. B. M'Keen (Labour, Wellington South), 817 names on another from Dnnediu submitted by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. AY. Dovvnie Stewart), and a third, signed by 35 people, was presented by Mr. J. O'Brien (Labour, Westland).

It is contended by the petitioners that a determined effort is boing mado to bring about price fixation of household commodities, thus increasing the cost of living. The petitioners ask for legislation to prevent manufacturers and others from stipulating the selling price of goods, and the granting of extra bonuses or discounts to encourage the maintenance of the prices at the stipulated level. It is also suggested that steps be taken to prevent the boycott of manufacturers or retailers who do not agreo to price fixation.
