ACTION WANTED

TO PREVENT EDUCATION CUTS

Members of the Wellington School Committees ' and Educational Federation continued a discuwion on Monday evening on the question of the reduction of social service*- raised last month by Mr. J. L. Coombs, headmaster of Mount Cook Schools. The speakers strongly opposed any'reduction that would tend to create still larger classes. The lack of public '.'interest on the question of education was deplored, | and although it was admitted that of late there had been indication of some improvement in thia'.respect a motion was passed directing the executive,to draw up a plan with a view to stimulating school committees and home and1 school associations 'to a more active interest in the. bigger issues of education. The motion also directed ■ the executive to consider ways and means of increasing the number of home and school associations and stimulating public interest by arranging for competent speakers to, address householders' meetings. The meeting also passed a resolution placing on record its appreciation of the effort of the standing committee of the New Zealand Federation of Teachers in stimulating public opinion against the probable proposal to reduce educational services."
