PURPLE FOR AUTUMN

SKIRTS WITH FROU-FROU

Autumn and winter fashions were' displayed by 150 British firms at tho annual Fashions Exhibition at Olympia (states the "Daily Mail")-. Mannequins from each , firm paraded three times a day before the trade buyors, who had gathered from all pyer the world. One firm showed tho fashions of four different periods adapted to modern use.: They ; were- Qharles 11., Directoiro, Second Empire, and late Victorian, but the'general trend of fashion was definitely towards the Victorian period. It was shown that bustles would be worn with both day and evening dresses, the day dresses being accompanied by short, waisted jackets. Materials were to be very stiff. Gold and silver brocaded taffeta and a hard, lustrous satin known as "slipper satin" would be worn in the evening, thick crepes and marocains during the day. Brocaded velvet would also be popular. An important - featuro of tho new fashions shown on this occasion was that skirts should rustle, making the noise known to our grandmothers as a "frou-frou." Therefore, frilled, lacy petticoats must be worn with evening dresses. Much interest was shown in the Charles 11. period evening dress, which wa~s made of brocade and satin, with short puff sleeves and "off the shoulder" bodice. The most fashionablo' colours predicted- were purple, red, and brown for. tho daytime, and purple, white, and red for tho evening, but definitely purple for all ooi easions.
