CIVIC LEAGUE

MONTHLY MEETING

Mr. J. H. Whittaker presided over the monthly meeting of the Civic League, which was well attended.

Satisfaction was expressed that the City Council has approved of the suggestion made by the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand that picture theatre proprietors should be requested to show on the screen plans of the theatre exits, thereby encouraging patrons to use all the exits when performances arc concluded. Some time ago the league sought the assistance of the Town, Planning Institute in this matter, and it is hoped that the theatre proprietors will assist in the direcion indicated. The chairman was appointed as the league's representative on . the special committee set up by the Wellington Automobile Club in connection with th» proposed new northern outlet via Wadestown, Ngaio, and Khandallah. A report was tendered by the deputation which recently waited on the authorities concerning street lighting in the city. The matter had been fully discussed, and it was, evident that the department was anxious to do what it could to meet the wishes of the citizens. It was decided to express thanks for the information given,, and to accept the offer! of an address on lighting matters generally. Congratulations were extended to the Kilbirnie Municipal Electors' Association on securing the City Council's consent for the tramway right-of-way between Moxham avenue and Hamilton road to be' used by the public for traffic purposes. It was also decided to request the City Council to accelerate the formation of Ruahine street, and thus, relieve the extra traffic congestion in Moxhain avenue caused by the opening of the new tunnel. In view of the fact that pedestrians on the Queen's. Drive are-compelled to walk on the road, the-council is to be asked to provide footpath accommodation, as finance permits. Various speakers stressed the point that .there should be a safety zone for walkers, and mentioned narrow escapes from accidents, especially in the vicinity of Ohiro Bay to Haugbton Bay. Felicitations are to be conveyed to the City Council on the completion and opening of the Mount Victoria tunnel. The chairman mentioned that the annual meeting will be held, next month, and took the opportunity of .thanking the members of the executive and'council for their support during the past year. In reply, several speakers referred to the able manner in which the chairman had conducted the business of the league, and 'he was accorded a round of applause for his service. '. ■.
