ANZAC MEMORIAL

SUEZ CANAL ZONE

SIR B. MACKENNAL'S WORK

(Received 13th October, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 12th October. It is understood that the late Sir Bertram Mackennal had practically completed the memorial to the Australians and New Zealanders serving in the Suez Canal zone, and intended for erection at Port Said. Sir Bertram Mackennal took over the work when the late Sir Aston Webb and Mr. Alfred Gilbert relinquished it five years ago. The slow progress is believed to be due to the fact that ho disliked the involved design, showing. Australian and New Zealand cavalrymen side by side, one on a falling wounded horse, the other on a rearing charger. Sir Bertram Mackennal was the only man whose initials, a tiny "8.M." at the base of the King's were allowed to appear on coins of the realm. His great friends were the late Sir William Orpen, who died on 30th September, and Mr. Charles Ricketts, who died on Sth October. All three famous Academicians died within a few days of one another.
