AUTOPAY'S EPSOM WIN

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, sth October. A great measure of Autopay's Epsom Handicap success; was due to M. M'Carten. He rode the Paper Money stallion to perfection. Although his owners (Messrs. H. F. Woods and N. E. Aitken) were confident and went for a good win, all their investments could not reduce Autopay below double figures in the betting, Pentheus being favourite and very steady owing to big liabilities incurred early by the bookmakers. The actual race was interesting only m the last furlong.. M'Carten, as instructed, had Autopay flat out for five furlongs to break up the field. This he succeeded in doing, and then M'Carten sat quiet to the turn. From that point it was a case of hot foot for the post, with Ticino and Pentheus, who were always handy, in pursuit. Autopay was too good, however, and stubbornly fought off Ticino, while Pentheus weakened a little to run third. Autopay was well beaten with 9.8 in the Shorts Handicap on the second day. Love Song ran quite a fair race in the Epsom to finish fifth, his last in J. H. Jefferd's interests, for he was sold prior to the race. Havaspot paced it with Pentheus for seven furlongs, but then weakened. Ges-, ture ran another poor race, following it up with a failure in the Shorts Handicap. This was probably her last race, as it is stated that she will be retired to the stud.
