SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS

Although barometers have risen over the greater part of New Zealand they have continued to be extremely low in the far south, and pressure gradient is therefore still very steep, especially from Cook Strait southwards. Strong westerly winds have ruled, backing occasionally to south-westerly in places. The weather has teen changeable and squally, with showers in most districts with a westerly aspect. Conditions, have been, stormy in . the Foveaux Strait area, and heavy hail showers have occurred there. In eastern districts, however, although the winds have been strong, there has been no rain except in the hilly portions. Arthur's Pass reports a further 214 points of rain, making a total of 814 points for the past three days.
