"GOOD THING" BEATEN

CONCENTRATE UNLUCKY

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, sth October. As the race was run, Concentrate was the best of good things beaten in the Metropolitan, He was in all kinds of trouble, from which he extricated himself very late, and had the rank outsider, Strength, beaten in another stride, only inches separating them on the post. New Zealand horses took the honours in the betting market, Chide, Veilmoud, and Concentrate being three of the four bestbacked horses. B. H. Morris rode Concentrate, and he has hardly found his legs yet. Mr. R. J. Murphy must now realise it is a risky experiment bringing New Zealand jockeys to Sydney who have not had experience here. Morris, like other Now Zealumlei's, would do well in Australia once he had settled down. He rode Concentrate very vigorously over the last furlong, but then it was too late. Chide, with his 9.4, was not handled at all well by W. Cook, but'it is doubtful if he would have gained a place, anyway. Cook asked Chide for his effort; a mile from home, and was winning the race at the turn. Veilmoud again showed his disinclination for racing in a field. When the other runners bunched round him, that was the end of his chance. Strength, the winner at forlorn odds, is an ex-pony performer, although an importation from England. E. Bartle was secured for him at the last minute, and confessed after the race that he' had regarded the engagement as just a ride. Strength had a great run throughout, but Bartle stated that he was glad when the post was reached, for Concentrate had him in the nest stride. Veilmond's stablemate, Carry On, ran on really well to gain third place, and she may easily bring the Melbourne Cup to Sydney. Talkie ran the best race of the lightweights, just out of a place, while Stately was as disappointing as in the Epsom Handicap.
