Thi! Legislation providing I'or the postponement of this year's licensing poll was introduced in ihe House oJ: Representatives by Governor-Gen-oral's Message last night and read a first lime.
The- Bill sets out (hat no licensing poll shall be taken simultaneously with any General Election that may be held ft any time before the olst IJceember, in?,.'!, and the result of the licensing poll taken simultaneously with the last General Election is to continue in torec until a licensing poll is held in accordance with a further provision in Ihe Bill. This stipulates that a licensing poll shall be taken simultaneously with the first General Election to be hold after 31st December, 1033 notwithstanding that the preceding Parliament may have been dissolved before it had been two years in existence. A division was called for by Mr. J. M Combs (Labour, Lyttelton)' on the question that provision be made in accordance with His Excellency's Message—a formal preliminary- stage but the point was not pressed" and the first readit'g was carried on the voices
