NATIONAL GOVERNMENT NECESSARY

BALDWIN'S STATEMENT TO COUNTRY

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received 25th August, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 25th August. Mr. Baldwin, Leader of the Conservative Party and a member of the new British Government, has issued a statement that the formation of a National Government is a guarantee that those knowing the facts realise the gravity of the situation, and are resolved on immediate measures to put the country's finances in order. "We are confronting a grave national crisis, which, if not courageously and firmly handled, will be fraught with serious consequences to every man, woman, and child throughout the country, but the country proves its greatness in times of national emergency. I have sufficient confidence in the people to know that this occasion will be no exception. "A dissolution at this stage, followed by a General Election, would be disastrous. This fact at present dominates the situation. The only means whereby the national emergency can be met is the close co-operation of all parties. Conservatives have consented for this reason for a limited period to enter into a National Government to balance the Budget and restore confidence in the national credit. "There is no question of a permanent coalition. No party is called on to sacrifice any of its principles, but it is everyone's duty to eschew party differences."
