CO-OPERATION FOR ONE PURPOSE
TO KEEP WORLD TRUST IN BRITISH FINANCE
I Received 251h August, 1 p.m.) LONDON, 24th August. An official communique stales that ihc Prime Minister's constillations with Mr. Baldwin and Sir Herbert Samuel and Mr. Snowden liave made considerable progress regarding the members of Ihe Ministry, the specific object of which will be to deal with the existing national emergency. It will not he a coalition in the usual ?ense, but a Government co-operating for this o?ie purpose, after which the parties will resume their respective positions. It is expected that Parliament will be summoned for the Bth September, when proposals will be submitted for a very large reduction in expenditure, and the provision on an equitable basis of the further funds required to finance the Budget. As the commercial well-being, not only of the British nation, but of a large part of the civilised world, is built up and rests on w;cll-founded confidence in sterling, the new Government will take whatever steps are deemed necessary to maintain that confidence. It is believed that Mr. Mac Donald is not likely to have the support of more than forty Labour members of the House of Commons, while more than 200 will remain with Mr. Henderson. There is little doubt that the full Conservative strength will be behind the National Administration; likewise, the great majority of the Liberals. With a unanimous Liberal and Conservative support, the National Cabinet would have a clear majority of forty, even if the whole rank and file of Labour went into opposition.
