SQUALLY WEATHER

BUT IMPROVEMENT DUE

The weather is still being affected by a rather intense depression which is nioving slowly across- the Dominion. Since last night it's centre has crossed southern districts, and this morning it was off the East Coast of the South Island. Hence the strong northerly winds which have prevailed have given place to westerlies, and in some places to south-westerlies. Squally and changeable conditions have been, experienced generally, and there has been rain at I times in nearly all parts, although Canterbury and Hawkes Bay have had little or no rain during tho last twentyfour hours. The western part of the South Island has had some further heavy falls of rain. Arthur's Pass reports 337 points, Okuru 313, and Westport and Greymouth 94 each, whilst five inches of snow has fallen at the Hermitage. Cloudy and unsettled weather prevailed in Auckland yesterday. The wind was a north-easterly, and drizzling rain fell at times. Light rain fell in Wellington early yesterday ' morning, but, although cloudy and threatening, the rest of the day was mild and fair. A strong northerly wind persisted all day, and at night reached gale force. The maximum gust was t>ne of 58 miles an hour at 11.45 p.m. Heavy rain fell between 10.15 p.m. and 11.15 p.m., sixteen points being recorded at Kelburn and ;!5 at Lower Hutt. Christchurch had a sunny day yesterday with a fresh northerly wind. It was cloudy but fair in Dunediu, heavy, rain falling there last night. Moderate to strong winds will still reach gale force in places, the direction being from the west or- south-west. Changeable and squally weather, with occasionnl showers, may be expected generally, but an improvement in most districts is likely to-be in evidence tomorrow.
