ATHLETES' TOUR

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

PROFIT OF £191

The statement of receipts and payments in connection with the tour of New Zca- ! land last summer by the three American athletes, H. Rothort, G. Simpson, and R. Kiscr, was made available to-day. Although originally it was thought the tour would show a profit of about £200, the actual profit, as disclosed by the balancesheet, was £190 ISs. Receipts, exclusive of the guarantee money put up by the N.Z.A.A.A. Council, and the five athletic centres, totalled £946 Gs 7d, and tho expenditure £755 8s 7d. In the division of the profit of £100 ISs, the N.Z.A.A.A. Council, taking, as arranged, 25 per cent., receives £47 Ms (id. The following amounts have been allocated to the centres: Auckland, £21 1(M Cd; Wangamii-Taranaki, £27 5s sd; Wellington, £79 38s lOd; Canterbury, £12 Ss ]0d; Otago, £1 13s lid. Although, according to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's representative, one of the complaints the Americans made on their return to the United States, was that they had to compete at small towns, such as "Motueka, tlisbornc, and Waimate, where a fair income from the attendance was impossible," it is interesting to note in tho details of the profit on the various meetings that the gatherings at Waimatc and Taihapc, of the smaller towns visited, showed splendid returns of £4G 5s 4il and £75 16s. It requires no stretch of tho imagination to realise that the receipts -from these two meetings had an important bearing on tho financial success of the tour. The poorest meetings relatively were the second held in Wellington in March, and the one held in Chrislchurch, on which tho profits v,-ere £4S 13s 7d and £35 18s lid respectively. The profit from Duncdin was only £11 Ss 4d, but this poor result was due solely to bad weather. The first meeting in Wellington, at which the appearance of the Australian champion sprinter, J. Carlton, was au added attraction, showed the^biggest profit of all—£37S 2s Sd. The Auckland meeting returned a profit, of £114 4s 4d. Other details, in addition -to those already mentioned, are as follows: Wanganui, £68 10s 7d; Hawera, £17 0s lid; New Plymouth, £18 16s sd; Gisborne, £14 Cs 6d; Napier, £29 8s; jNlasterton, £37 15s. The details of expenditure show that steamer fares amounted to £179 17s 7d; travelling and accommodation in New Zealand to £272 14s sd, and the athletes' personal expenses to £87 Os 3d.
