THE MATSON LINE
A MINISTER'S SUPPORT
HEALTHY COMPETITION.
:The view that steps-sliould'be;taken to restrict the operation^ of the.MatBon Shipping Line .in;; Neve Zealand waters'is not shared by the PpstinasterGeneral (the Hon.. J.B. Donald), who favours the service on the ground' taat it will create healthy,competition1 with the Union,Company;;,t6 the benefit;fof Now Zealand. ■ -\- ■''■
Speaking in.-tho House of' Representatives last nighty the Minister .said he did not agree with the contention that the service should be interfered with. He. held no brief for tho'Matsbn.; Line, nor did he desire to see the M-/Union Company put off tho San\Franci6co run, but he thought it would be a; great mistake to prevent the line froni operating to New Zealand. Since the Miatson service commenced-' ;the , Union Company had joined up with the Canadian Pacific Kail way Company, and it had been stated that the steamers on-the Vancouver run \y!ro to be inerased in size, the speed increased;fand a more frequent .service-Instituted. Why? Simply because of j the newly-' introduced competition. ■ The advent of the Matson Line must be a good thing for New Zealand.1 The day was not far distant:when the.United States would want to do more trade with the Dominion than was the case a*, present, and if we closed our portsto the Matson Line we would dp ourselves an injury. He therefore hoped- a little more discretion would be used and that the outcry agaiust tho American line would not continue.
A notification in. the "Gazette" issued lust evening declares that the Canadian goose (Branta c.-uiadeusis) shall now cease to be regarded as imported game. ,
