BOOKMAKER CAUGHT
"ONE OF THE SMALL FRY"'
"This man is one of the small fry in the bookmaking world," said Mr. D. Perry at the Magistrate's Court to-day, when'he asked Mr. "W. 8.. Woodward, S.M., to extend .leniency to Guy Thwaites, a storekeeper, aged 51, who. pleaded "guilty to a charge o£ . using a shop at 17 and 19; Majorib'anks street, as a common gaming house. ■ ■ Detective-Sergeant Tricklebarik said the accused had beeu carrying on business as a bookmaker as well as keeping a shop. When the shop was raided on Saturday the police discovered that £3 15s had been taken in bets. Mr. Perry said the accused had been carrying on the business as an agent for another bookmaker, receiving only Is. 6d in the_ pound commission. As ho was operating in only a small way, taking bets from 2s 6d to 10s, it was obvious that the business was not a very lucrative one. • The Magistrate inflicted a fine of £7 10s. The accused was given a fortnight to find the money.
