MR. LANG AT CANBERRA
INTERVIEWING MR. SCULLIN
HARD TERMS LIKELY
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received 20th July, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The "Herald's" Canberra.correspondent ..says that it is certain that Mr. Lang will receive no undertaking or offer of immediate financial assistance from the Commonwealth when he interviews Mr. Scullin to-day. The most he is likely to receive is a promise that consideration will be given to the desirability of calling together the Australian Loan Council to consider the position brought about by the state of finances in New South Wales. Before even this undertaking will be given Mr. Lang will have to give satisfactory assurances that the economy plan to which ho agreed at the Melbourne Premiers' Conference will be carried out in New South Wales without further delay; that ho will agree to join tho Loctn Council and be bound by its decisions; that his Sfrite undertake to honour its interest obligations. If the State Government has sufficient money to pay all Civil servants fully next Thursday only part of the higher salaries may be paid. It is estimated that fourteen of Mr. Lang's party are extremely restive and intend to insist that the Premier join the Loan Council and refrain from further conflict with the Governor or Upper House. It is said that they fear that his tactics will wreck the Labour Party and certainly prejudice the chances of country members at future elections. Tho fact that no word has yet been received from the Dominions Office concerning the Governor's refusal to grant more Labour appointments to the Upper House has given rise to the belief that tho Dominions Office does not intend to intervene in the dispute.
